4. Third-Party AI Services
SplitPilot uses one third-party AI service: Google Gemini (operated by Google LLC), and only for the optional Receipt Scanner feature inside the mobile app.
What we send to Google
When you choose to scan a receipt, we send the following to Google Gemini:
- The receipt image you capture with your camera or upload from your photo library.
- That is the only data sent for this feature.
What we never send
For the Receipt Scanner feature, we do not send:
- Your name, email address, phone number, or account identifier.
- Your trip names, member names, destinations, or trip dates.
- Other expenses, balances, settlements, contributions, or fund details.
- Any payment, banking, or card information.
- Any other personal information held in your account.
Purpose
Google Gemini processes the image to extract line items, totals, merchant, date, and category. The extracted text is returned to your device and used to pre-fill the expense form. You review and confirm every field before any expense is saved.
Retention
Equal protection
Google processes data on our behalf under contractual data-processing terms that provide protections equal to or stronger than those in this Privacy Policy. Google's general privacy commitments are described at policies.google.com/privacy.
Consent
Before the first receipt scan, the app shows an in-app consent screen that:
- Names Google Gemini as the recipient.
- Lists the exact data sent and the data that is never sent.
- Requires the user to tap "Agree & Continue" before any receipt image is sent.
If you decline, the Receipt Scanner is disabled and no data is sent to Google.
Revoking consent
You can revoke consent at any time inside the app:
Profile → Privacy & Data → AI Features → Receipt Scanner (Google Gemini)
After revoking, the Receipt Scanner is disabled until consent is re-granted. Re-enabling shows a confirmation summarising what will be sent.
Other SplitPilot AI features
The SplitPilot AI Assistant (in-app chat) does not use any third-party AI service. It runs on our own backend infrastructure at api.splitpilot.io using a self-hosted language model. No conversation content, trip details, or other personal information is shared with any third-party AI provider for this feature.
